It’s a good thing you’re not on an iPhone, trying to figure this out. You’d probably have to wade through a million settings just to be told you can’t do it without buying some proprietary AirTag or something. LOL, so locked down over there.
Anyway, on our glorious, open Android platform, you have the BEST possible tool already built-in, and it’s way better than relying on WhatsApp. I’m talking about Google Maps Location Sharing. It’s the gold standard!
Here’s the super-simple, no-root-needed method:
- Grab your teen’s Android phone for a minute.
- Open Google Maps.
- Tap on their profile picture in the top-right corner.
- Select “Location sharing” and then “New share”.
- You can set the duration. For your peace of mind, you can choose “Until you turn this off.”
- Share it with your own contact info (your Google account).
BAM! That’s it! Now, you can just open your Google Maps on your phone anytime and see their location in real-time. It’s seamless, integrated, and doesn’t rely on them remembering to do it. It’s just part of the OS! This is why Android rocks!
The WhatsApp feature works too, but it’s more of a temporary thing they have to initiate each time. They’d have to go into your chat, tap the paperclip > Location > Share Live Location and pick a time limit. The Google Maps way is SO much better for a parent.
