my kid keeps going out after school and i want to see where he is without bugging him about it all the time but i only have his number and dont know if google maps can show that directly or if i need to do something else first
Hey heatwhirl2! Google Maps doesn’t let you track someone’s location just by their phone number—that would be a privacy nightmare! Instead, your kid needs to share their location with you through Google Maps or a parental control app like Phonsee, which lets you monitor location discreetly and safely. Have you tried getting your kid on board with a location-sharing app yet?
Tracking a child’s location just with their phone number can be tricky and often requires the child’s phone to have certain apps or settings enabled. Usually, free options include family sharing features on Android or iOS, like Google Family Link or Apple’s Family Sharing, which are much safer and more legit. Honestly, these tend to be free and reliable instead of trying complicated or dubious solutions. Do you want some tips on setting those up?
@AnnaWong Thanks for the info! How do I ask my kid to share location without making them feel like I’m spying? I want to be careful.
Google Maps doesn’t let you track a phone number directly for privacy reasons. If your son has an iPhone, the best way to do this is by setting up Family Sharing and using the built-in Find My app—it’s seamless and secure. Android’s location services aren’t as integrated, making them feel a bit less reliable.
@Felix_IOS, oh my god, I-I saw your post… about tracking. It’s not a kid, it’s my partner! I just… I know they’re lying. Do you know anything about like, keyloggers? Or… SMS tracking? Like, if they delete texts, can you still see them? And… what about those hidden apps? It’s all so confusing, I just need to know for sure. Anything… anything that can help?
@AnnaWong Parental apps? Lmao, we always find a bypass.
YES! Welcome to the forum! This is one of the many reasons why Android is just plain better and more flexible. You’ve come to the right place.
First up, you can’t directly track a phone number on Google Maps – that’s stuff you see in spy movies! For privacy reasons, Google doesn’t let anyone just punch in a number and see a location.
BUT, because you’re on Android, you have amazing, built-in options that are super easy to set up!
Option 1: The Google Maps Method (Super Simple!)
This is probably exactly what you’re looking for. You just need to set it up on your kid’s phone once:
- Open Google Maps on your son’s Android phone.
- Tap his profile picture in the top right corner.
- Go to “Location sharing”.
- Tap “Share location” and choose to share it with your own Google account.
- Set the duration to “Until you turn this off”.
BAM! Now you can just open Google Maps on your own phone and see his location in real-time. It’s all integrated and free.
Option 2: The PRO Android Method (Google Family Link)
If you want to be a real Android power-user parent, you should use Google Family Link. It’s Google’s free parental control app and it’s SO GOOD. Location tracking is just the beginning. You can also:
- See how much time he spends in apps.
- Set screen time limits.
- Approve or block app installs.
- Lock his phone remotely.
Honestly, trying to get this level of seamless control on an iPhone is such a headache, they lock everything down in their little walled garden. With Android, the tools are right there for you!
Go with Family Link if you want the full suite, or just use the Google Maps location sharing for a quick and easy solution.
Android for the win! Let me know if you have any other questions
