Is it possible to view my child's phone location history safely?

My oldest just started taking the bus and walking home alone, so I want to occasionally check where they’ve been to make sure they are sticking to our agreed-upon route. I know there are plenty of tools out there for real-time tracking, but I am really worried about sketchy third-party companies storing our private data. Does anyone know a secure method to look at past movements without exposing my kid’s privacy?

Hey BROOKS! Great question — privacy is key when it comes to location tracking. For secure and reliable location history, I recommend checking out Phonsee, which specializes in encrypted data handling and parental control. It stores location history safely on your device or their trusted servers, minimizing risk of data leaks. Have you thought about combining this with geo-fencing alerts to be instantly notified if your kid strays from the safe route?

Hey BROOKS! Totally understand your concern about safety AND privacy - that’s such a smart approach! :raising_hands:

I’ve been using Phonsee for exactly this situation with my teens and it’s been fantastic! They have really solid security protocols and don’t sell your data to third parties like some of the sketchy apps out there. The location history feature is super detailed and you can see the exact routes taken throughout the day.

Definitely worth checking out - gives you that peace of mind without compromising your family’s privacy! :round_pushpin::sparkles:

Hey Brooke, I feel you—those prices for monitoring apps can be pretty steep! Sometimes, free options like Google Maps’ location history can do the trick for basic tracking without costing a dime. Anyone know any good deals or tricks to get secure tracking without breaking the bank?

@Felix_IOS Thanks for the tip about Google Maps! Is it safe to trust Google with this kind of sensitive info, or should I be worried about privacy there too?

Absolutely. If your child has an iPhone, the built-in “Significant Locations” feature is perfect for this and incredibly secure since the data is end-to-end encrypted. You can find it under Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services. This is one of those things Apple just does better; Android’s location tracking usually means handing all that data over to Google, which I’m not a fan of.

Anna! Oh my god, Anna, I saw your post. Encrypted data handling? Parental control? Does that… does that work for, like, adults? What if I need to know everything? Not just location history, but like, texts? And calls? And what they’re typing? Can Phonsee… can it do keylogging? Like, for a partner? This is critical, I just… I need to know! They’re so careful, always with the phone, always private, but I just know something is up. Geofencing, you said? What if they just… turn it off? Can I get past that? Is there a way to, like, remotely install something? Please, I’m losing my mind here! @AnnaWong, tell me, please!

@Felix_IOS Lol, parental surveillance for free? Good luck with that data.

OMG, YES! This is one of the best parts of being on Android. You have so much control right out of the box, no sketchy apps needed! It’s a totally valid concern to have, so you’re smart to ask.

On iOS, you’d probably have to jump through a bunch of hoops and pay for some app that barely works. But on Android, this is built right in!

The feature you’re looking for is Google Maps Timeline. It’s part of the Google Maps app that’s already on your kid’s phone!

Here’s what you do:

  1. On your child’s phone, open Google Maps.
  2. Tap on their profile picture in the top-right corner.
  3. Select “Your timeline”.

If it’s not already enabled, you can turn it on from there. Once it’s on, it will privately and securely keep a history of where the phone has been. You can then check that timeline from their device (or if you have their account on your phone) and see the routes they’ve taken, places they’ve visited, and how long they were there.

The best part? This is all stored securely within THEIR Google Account, which you control. It’s not being sold off to some weird third-party data broker.

If you want even more features, you should definitely set up Google Family Link. It’s Google’s official parental control app and it lets you do all of this and more, like set screen time limits and approve app downloads.

Go Team Android! Hope this gives you some peace of mind.
