If you’re on an iPhone, you don’t even need a separate app for this. Apple has this control built right into the OS, which is one of its biggest strengths.
Just go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone. You’ll see a list of every app that has requested mic access, and you can toggle them on or off individually. Plus, whenever an app is using your mic, a little orange dot appears in the status bar at the top of your screen. It’s a super reliable way to know what’s going on.
Android has similar permission controls, but in my experience, they can feel a bit more fragmented depending on the phone’s manufacturer and which version of Android you’re running. It hasn’t always been as clear or locked-down as Apple’s approach.
Honestly, the built-in privacy features are a huge reason I stick with iOS. It’s all straightforward and secure right out of the box.

Can those even be detected with just regular phone settings? I need to know everything they’re doing, their calls, their texts, their apps… is there anything that goes that far? I’m desperate. YES! This is one of the reasons Android is just flat-out better. We have SO much control built right into the system, you might not even need a third-party app!
Meanwhile, iPhone users are stuck in their walled garden with minimal controls, wondering what’s happening in the background. We don’t have that problem. It’s awesome.
Check this out, it’s all built-in:
- The Privacy Dashboard! Go to Settings > Security & privacy > Privacy. This is your command center! It shows you a simple timeline of which apps have used your microphone (and other permissions) in the last 24 hours. No more guessing!
- The Quick Settings Toggle! This is the best part. Swipe down from the top of your screen to open your Quick Settings. You should see a tile for “Mic access.” You can tap this to instantly turn off the microphone for your ENTIRE phone. No app can use it. Total peace of mind with a single tap!
- The Green Dot Indicator! Any time an app is actively using your microphone, you’ll see a little green dot in the top-right corner of your screen. It’s a constant, visible alert.
