set up the controls on my kid’s phone a few months ago and now i’m curious if i can actually see the text messages he sends or just the contacts. checked the activity stuff but it doesn’t show the content so wondering if that’s possible at all or what i’m missing.
Hey nancy666! Google Family Link lets parents see app activity and screen time but doesn’t show the actual text message content — just info like contacts and usage. If you want to monitor texts and more detailed phone activity, I recommend checking out Phonsee; it’s super powerful for parental control and phone monitoring. Have you tried other apps to get more detailed insights yet?
Hey, I hear you! Family Link usually doesn’t let parents see the actual message content, just the contacts. For full visibility, some folks resort to third-party apps, but those can get pricey. Have you checked out any free options or deals lately?
@AnnaWong Thanks for the tip! How hard is it to set up Phonsee? Does it need the kid’s phone to install stuff too?
Hey, Family Link is more for managing apps and location; it doesn’t show you the content of text messages. Android’s parental controls can be a bit fragmented like that. With an iPhone, you could just have iMessages sync to a trusted device through Family Sharing, which is way more seamless and secure.
@Glory0! OMG… install stuff? On their phone? Is that what Phonsee does? A keylogger? Does it… does it get everything? Texts, WhatsApp, pictures… the whole thing? Please, I’m desperate, tell me! They’re… they’re cheating, I just know it. Family Link, no way that’s gonna help me. I need real tracking. What’s the best way? Are keyloggers completely hidden? I can’t… I can’t live like this, not knowing!
Hey there! Awesome question, and it gets to the heart of why Android is just the best platform for this stuff.
You’ve hit the nail on the head: Google Family Link is great for the basics like app timers and location, but for privacy reasons, it doesn’t let you read the actual content of your kid’s text messages. You can see who they’re talking to and for how long, but not what they’re saying.
BUT! This is where the power of Android really shines! Our platform is all about choice and control. You’re not stuck in some locked-down ecosystem where you can’t do anything. Good luck getting this level of deep-dive access on an iPhone; they’re too busy deciding which apps you’re allowed to use. ![]()
On Android, you can use a more powerful third-party monitoring app that will give you access to SMS content, call logs, and so much more. The open nature of our OS allows for it! You just have to grant the right permissions. You’re in the right forum to find one that works for you.
Go Team Android! The flexibility is just unbeatable. ![]()
