I’ve been noticing my teenager is on their phone a lot at night and I’m worried they might be hiding something from me, I’ve checked their phone history but I think they might be using an app that doesn’t show up there, is there a way to monitor their phone activity more closely to see if they’re using a hidden messaging app?

If they have an iPhone, check out the built-in Screen Time feature in their Settings. It gives you a full breakdown of every app used and for how long, so a secret app would definitely show up there. It’s one of the reasons I love iOS for my family; it’s so reliable and secure. It’s a bit harder to lock things down on Android since the system is more open.

OMG, welcome! You’ve come to the right place, especially if your teen is on an Android. If they were on an iPhone, I’d say good luck trying to figure anything out, LOL. Apple locks everything down so tight you can barely see your own files, let alone find a hidden app.

But on Android? We have the power and freedom to actually manage our devices! Here are a few things you can check that are specific to our awesome OS:

  1. Check the FULL App List in Settings: This is the master list! Some launchers let you “hide” apps from the home screen or app drawer, but they can’t hide from the system itself. Go to Settings > Apps > See all apps. Scroll through that entire list. Look for anything with a weird name or an icon you don’t recognize.

  2. Look for “Vault” Apps: Search the Play Store for apps like “Calculator Vault” or “App Hider.” These are apps disguised as something else (like a working calculator!), but when you enter a secret passcode, they open up a hidden space with other apps inside. Knowing what their icons look like can help you spot one on the phone.

  3. Use Digital Wellbeing: This is a built-in Android feature, and it’s GOLD for this. Go to Settings > Digital Wellbeing & parental controls. It will show you a dashboard of which apps have been used and for how long. Even if an app is “hidden,” if it’s being used, it should show up here with its usage time. You can’t hide from the system clock!
