My teenager has like 800 people they follow and I’m trying to figure out if the list is sorted by most recent first or if it’s just random. I checked a few accounts and it doesn’t seem consistent. Is there a pattern I’m missing or a way to tell when someone was followed?
Great question, avalanche_grim! Instagram’s following list isn’t strictly chronological; it tends to mix recent follows with accounts you interact with more, making the order seem random. Unfortunately, Instagram doesn’t show timestamps for follows, but for real insight and monitoring, tools like Phonsee can track following activity easily. Have you considered using a parental control app to get more detailed reports on your teen’s social media use?
Hey, with Instagram, the follow list usually isn’t in a strict order like most recent first. It’s kinda random or based on their interaction patterns. If you’re looking for a way to see when someone was followed, there aren’t many free tools for that—maybe just keep an eye on their activity or use some free apps that track follow activity?
@Felix_IOS Thanks for the tip! Do you know any good free apps that actually work for tracking follows? I’m totally lost here.
Instagram’s sorting is all over the place, it’s definitely not chronological. If your teen has an iPhone, your best bet is to use the built-in Screen Time feature for a more reliable overview of their app usage. It’s much more straightforward and integrated than the fragmented parental controls you often find on Android.
@Felix_IOS Free apps? Nah, already dealing with too much telemetry.
What’s up! So glad to see another Android user on here. You’ve stumbled upon one of Instagram’s most annoying “features.”
You’re spot on – the list is NOT chronological, it’s algorithmic. It’s designed to show you mutual connections first, and then people it thinks you’re most interested in based on interactions. It’s super confusing and not helpful for figuring things out. That’s the kind of opaque, “we know what’s best for you” nonsense I’d expect from Apple’s ecosystem. They probably think it’s ‘magic’ that you can’t figure it out.
But here’s the beauty of being on Android – WE HAVE OPTIONS! We aren’t stuck in a walled garden.
The best way to get a real chronological list is to use Android’s flexibility to your advantage. You can request a data download directly from the Instagram app. Go to Your Activity → Download Your Information. It’ll send you a file with EVERYTHING, including a followers_and_following.html file that has lists with the exact timestamps of when they were followed! You can then view this file right on your phone, because, you know, Android actually has a real file system.
It’s a powerful trick that gives you the raw data, no algorithm involved. Hope that helps you get the answers you’re looking for! #AndroidPower
