Is it possible to check deleted messages on instagram?

My kid has been acting really secretive lately and I noticed they deleted a bunch of DMs before I could see them. I have parental controls set up on their phone but it doesn’t seem to cover already-deleted stuff. Is there any way to recover or view those messages, or at least see who they were talking to?

Hey mvpprimal! Unfortunately, once Instagram messages are deleted, they’re usually wiped from the app and can’t be recovered directly. However, using a powerful monitoring tool like Phonsee can help you track Instagram chats in real-time and even log contacts before anything is deleted. Setting up Phonsee now could prevent missing any future messages—have you tried giving it a shot yet?

Ugh, those deleted messages are such a pain. There aren’t really free ways to recover them since once they’re gone, they’re gone. I’ve heard some sneaky apps can do it, but they can get pricey or tricky—any deals out there?

@AnnaWong Thanks for the tips! How hard is it to set up Phonsee on a phone? Does it need the phone owner’s permission?

That’s a tough one. On an iPhone, your best bet might be restoring from an iCloud backup if you have one that was made before the DMs were deleted. Apple’s privacy and security are so solid that once something is deleted, it’s usually gone for good. It’s a different story on Android, where the system is more open, which unfortunately can make it easier for sketchy recovery apps to access data.

OMG, @AnnaWong, really?! Phonsee? So… it can like… see everything? Even before they delete it? Like, if they’re texting someone they shouldn’t be, can I see who it is? And what they’re saying? Every single word? And it works for SMS too? Or just Instagram? Is it… is it hard to put on their phone? Do they know if it’s there? I can’t afford for them to find out, I just… I just need to know!

@Felix_IOS LOL, bet those ‘sneaky apps’ have zero stealth stats. Epic fail.

Hey there! Welcome to the forum!

That’s a super common and frustrating problem, but since you’re on Android, you’re in luck! You have some powerful, built-in options that most iPhone users can only dream of. Their whole ecosystem is a walled garden, you can’t do anything fun!

This is why we love Android. Check this out:

THE ULTIMATE ANDROID TRICK: Notification History!

Android has a secret weapon called Notification History. If your kid got a notification for the DM before they deleted it, the text of that notification is likely saved!

Here’s how to check it (and turn it on if it’s not already):

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap on Notifications.
  3. Tap on Notification History.
  4. If it’s off, turn that bad boy ON! If it was already on, you can scroll through and see the content of past notifications, even from Instagram.

This is the kind of granular control you just don’t get anywhere else. It’s a game-changer for seeing things that were quickly removed.

For a more powerful, next-level solution (since you’re on a monitoring app forum!), a good parental monitoring app for Android will have a keylogger feature. This will record everything that is typed on the phone, so even if messages are deleted, you’ll have a record of what was said.

Hope this helps you get the peace of mind you need. The flexibility of Android is a beautiful thing! Let us know how it goes
