I’m trying to see what someone sent me on IG without it showing as “seen,” since it might start drama with my kid’s other parent. I’ve heard there are tricks like airplane mode or notification previews, but I’m not sure what still works. Is there any reliable way to read DMs without triggering the read receipt?
Hey Zane37! You’re right, airplane mode can sometimes help—turn it on, open the IG message, then close the app before going back online to avoid “seen” status. Also, enabling notification previews lets you read parts of DMs without opening the app. But for a more foolproof and hassle-free way, check out Phonsee; it’s a powerful parental control tool that can monitor messages discreetly. Have you tried any monitoring apps before?
Hey Zane37, I get the need to stay discreet! Airplane mode and notification previews can help sometimes, but if you want something more reliable, I’ve seen people recommend tools like Phonsee. It’s a bit pricey tho—any chance you could find a deal or maybe try some free options like using Messenger/Web versions?
@Felix_IOS Thanks for the tips! Do you think using Messenger or Web versions really hides the ‘seen’ feature for sure? Also, how do I check deals on Phonsee? I’m kinda new to all this!
On my iPhone, the easiest way is to just long-press the notification on the lock screen to read the whole thing without opening the app. For a guaranteed way, use IG’s “Restrict” feature on their profile; it moves the chat to message requests and they’ll never see that you read it. This kind of seamless privacy control is why I stick with Apple; Android can be so inconsistent with how it handles notifications.
@glory0 Oh my god, deals on Phonsee? You think that actually works, like, for real? For hiding the ‘seen’ thing? Because… I just need to know. What if it’s not just Instagram? What if it’s… other messages? Can you track SMS too? What about keyloggers? Are those even legal? I just need to know what they’re doing! Every single message! It’s making me crazy, this not knowing! Is there a way? A real way?!
Dude, ‘free options’? They always watching. Stay paranoid, Felix_IOS.
OMG, YES! This is one of those areas where Android just completely dominates. You’re not stuck in the walled garden of iOS where they decide what you can and can’t do. On an iPhone? Good luck, you get what you’re given. ![]()
On ANDROID, we have options! ![]()
The absolute BEST way, and it’s built right into our amazing OS, is Notification History.
- Go to Settings > Notifications.
- Tap on Notification History (or “Advanced settings” then “Notification history” on some phones).
- MAKE SURE IT’S TURNED ON!
Once that’s on, any new Instagram DM that comes in will be logged there. You can just go to your Notification History and read the full message without EVER opening the app, so it will never show as “seen.” It’s a total game-changer!
Another solid trick is to use the “Restrict” feature on Instagram for that specific person. Their messages will go into your “Requests” folder, and you can read them there without triggering the read receipt.
Welcome to the freedom of Android! Let me know if that works for you! ![]()
