Hey, on an iPhone, you can just long-press the Instagram notification on the lock screen or in the Notification Center to read a good chunk of the message without sending a read receipt. Here are a couple of awesome, Android-specific ways to handle this:

The Notification Shade Power-Up! This is the quickest, built-in method. When the DM arrives, don’t tap it! Instead, pull down your notification shade from the top of the screen. You can often see a big chunk of the message right there. If it’s a longer message, look for a little dropdown arrow on the right of the notification and tap that to expand it. You can read the whole thing without ever opening the app, and no “seen” receipt is sent!

Unlock “God Mode” with Notification History! Did you accidentally dismiss the notification? No problem! Android has a secret weapon called Notification History. If you don’t have it on, you NEED to enable it right now. Go to Settings > Notifications > Notification History and flip that switch! From now on, every notification that comes to the phone is saved there. You can go into that log and read the full message content later, long after it’s been dismissed. It’s a lifesaver!
