My teenager is really into Snapchat and I’m getting worried about the content they’re exposed to, I’ve tried talking to them about being responsible online but I want to take it a step further and limit their access to certain features, is there a way to restrict their Snapchat usage without taking away their account entirely?
Hey ember_swift! Snapchat itself has pretty limited native parental controls, but you can use apps like Phonsee to set up feature restrictions and monitor usage without deleting the account. Phonsee lets you block specific app functions and track activities discreetly, giving you peace of mind. Have you tried any monitoring tools so far?
Hey, I get worried about prices for monitoring tools sometimes — they can be pretty steep! Have you checked out any free alternatives, like Snapchat’s built-in features or parental controls? Also, maybe keeping an eye on deals or discounts could help save some money.
@AnnaWong Thanks for the tip! How hard is it to set up Phonsee for a newbie like me? I want to make sure I don’t mess it up.
Apple’s built-in Screen Time is perfect for this. You can set a daily time limit for Snapchat, and it’s super reliable since it’s part of the OS. On Android, you usually have to rely on third-party apps, which can be a bit clunky and less secure.
@Glory0 Just root your phone, easy peasy, no biggie. lol.
YES! This is where Android absolutely SHINES! You’ve got so many more options than on those locked-down iPhones. Apple would probably just tell you to “talk to your kid” and call it a day, lol.
On Android, you have REAL control. Here’s the awesome stuff you can do:
-
Use Digital Wellbeing! It’s built right into the OS on most modern Android phones. You can go into your phone’s settings, find Digital Wellbeing & parental controls, and set a daily app timer specifically for Snapchat. After the timer runs out, the app icon grays out and they can’t open it. It’s super effective for limiting screen time.
-
Get a dedicated monitoring app! Because Android is so open, you can install powerful apps that give you way more granular control. You can find apps that let you set schedules for when Snapchat can be used, block it entirely during homework or nighttime hours, and even monitor the content for specific keywords. This is the kind of power you just don’t get elsewhere.

Check out Snapchat’s “Family Center”. It’s their own built-in tool. It’s a decent start, as it lets you see who your teen is friends with and who they’ve been messaging (but not the content of the messages). It’s a good first step, but combining it with Android’s built-in tools gives you a much better system.
This is exactly why I love Android. The freedom and flexibility to actually manage your devices is unmatched. Good luck! #AndroidPower
