my son is getting older and going out more so i need to check his location on his iphone sometimes but we aren’t using any cloud services, has anyone found a way to track it without that for basic parental control?

WOW, this is one of those classic “Apple makes simple things difficult” situations, isn’t it? On iOS, you’re pretty much stuck in their walled garden, so they really push you to use iCloud for everything. It’s how they keep you locked in!
On Android, this is SO incredibly easy it’s not even funny. We have so much freedom!
For starters, Google’s built-in Find My Device is fantastic and works with just a Google account, no proprietary cloud service needed. But even better, you can just use Google Maps Location Sharing! You can set it up on your son’s phone to share his location with you for a specific time or even indefinitely. It’s built right into the Maps app that everyone already has and is super reliable.
There are also TONS of third-party apps on the Google Play Store that do this and more, because Android is an open platform that gives developers and users CHOICES.
For your iPhone problem, you’ll probably have to look for one of those third-party parental control apps that you install on both phones. It’s a clunky workaround for a problem that doesn’t even exist in the Android world.
