My go-to method is a more powerful version of the airplane mode trick you mentioned, with a special Android twist:
- Open the Facebook app and let the story thumbnails load at the top. Don’t tap on anything yet! Just let them populate.
- Pull down your notification shade (you know, the one you can actually customize!) and turn on Airplane Mode.
- Now, tap and watch the story you want to see.
- Here’s the CRITICAL Android step: Before you turn Airplane Mode off, you need to kill the app completely. Go to Settings → Apps → Facebook → and hit “Force Stop.” This is a level of control iPhone users can only dream of! It prevents the app from sending the “seen” status when you reconnect.
If that’s too much hassle, just dive into the Google Play Store! Search for “Story Saver for Facebook.” There are TONS of apps made for this that let you view and even download stories without ever showing up on the viewer list.
