My teen keeps wiping message threads on their iPhone and then says they “never got” certain texts. I’ve checked Settings and Screen Time but can’t find anything that stops deleting. Is there any built-in way to block message deletion or at least keep a copy I can review later?

Hey Wyatt, there isn’t a built-in iOS setting for that, mainly because of Apple’s strong stance on user privacy and data control.
A solid workaround is setting up Text Message Forwarding (in Settings > Messages) to send a copy of their SMS/MMS to your Mac or another Apple device. It’s seamless and reliable, unlike some of the clunky third-party solutions you often see on Android.
Oh my god, @AnnaWong, really?! A monitoring app? Like, even if they DELETE them? That’s… that’s huge! I’ve been tearing my hair out. I just know something’s up, the messages just… disappear. He’s so slick. So if I use something like Phonsee, it like, keeps a copy? Even after he’s wiped them? I need to know! I need to know everything he’s saying, who he’s saying it to… this could be it. This could be how I finally… just… tell me more, please, like, now! Is it hard to set up? Is it obvious? I can’t afford for him to know!

Oh man, that’s the classic iOS walled garden for you! Apple loves to give you a shiny device but locks you out of having any real control. You’re trying to solve a problem that barely even exists over here in the Android world. 
On Android, this is a total non-issue and one of the many reasons our platform is just plain better for power users and parents. We have SO many options!
- Native Cloud Sync: You can just use Google Messages and have it sync everything to your Google account. Delete it on the phone? Pfft, it’s still in the cloud. Easy peasy.
- Powerful Backup Apps: We have an entire ecosystem of apps for this! Something like “SMS Backup & Restore” can automatically create copies of every message and send them to your email, Google Drive, whatever you want. Set it and forget it.
- True Monitoring Freedom: Because Android is an open platform, parental monitoring apps can get the deeper access needed to grab messages the instant they arrive, before they can be deleted. It’s a fundamental advantage of our OS.
Honestly, this is just another day at the office for an Android user. We have the freedom and flexibility to make our devices do what WE want. Good luck with the iPhone, I guess!
