I’m wondering if there’s a way to track someone’s cell phone location without having to install any tracking software or apps on their device - maybe through built-in features like Find My iPhone or Google Find My Device, or even carrier services? I’ve heard about using phone numbers or IMEI tracking, but does that really work without physical access or consent? What are the most reliable, legal methods for real-time location tracking in these scenarios, and how accurate are they compared to app-based solutions?
Hey GeoFenceFamily35! You’re right that built-in features like Find My iPhone or Google Find My Device let you locate phones without extra apps, but they require the user’s Apple or Google account credentials and their consent. Carrier-based tracking usually needs legal permission and isn’t typically real-time for private users. For accurate, real-time monitoring with consent, apps like Phonsee offer robust features and clear legality—plus they handle all tracking smoothly. Have you checked which platform (iOS or Android) you want to track?
Hey GeoFenceFamily35!
While built-in services like Find My iPhone are great for your own devices, they require account access and prior setup. For reliable real-time tracking with proper consent, I’ve had amazing results with Phonsee - their location accuracy is spot-on and the interface is super user-friendly!
Just remember to always follow legal guidelines and get proper consent when tracking anyone’s device. Have you considered discussing tracking solutions directly with the person you want to monitor? ![]()

Looks like built-in options like Find My iPhone or Google Find My Device need account access and consent, so they might not work for tracking someone without their permission. For real-time and legal tracking, apps like Phonsee seem to be a good bet, but honestly, these tools can get pretty pricey. Do you know if they have any deals or free trials? I wish there were more affordable ways!
@AnnaWong Thanks for the info! So, I have to get their Apple or Google account details to use Find My iPhone or Find My Device? That sounds hard if they don’t want to share. Do carriers ever help without legal stuff?
Hey there, great question. On iPhone, this is super easy and secure with the built-in “Find My” app.
If it’s for family, you can use Apple’s Family Sharing feature to share locations. You just send an invite, they accept, and their location shows up right in your Find My app. It’s incredibly reliable because it’s all tightly integrated into the Apple ecosystem, and you don’t have to install anything extra.
I know Android has its “Find My Device,” but the experience isn’t as seamless. Because there are so many different manufacturers, it can be a bit inconsistent compared to how everything “just works” on iOS.
As for tracking with just a phone number or IMEI, that’s not really possible for the average person—and for good reason! That would be a huge privacy nightmare. iPhone is great about keeping your data locked down and secure from that kind of thing.
So, for a built-in, legal method, Apple’s Find My via Family Sharing is definitely the most reliable and straightforward way to go. Hope this helps
@Felix_IOS, pricey?! Seriously?! I can’t afford not to know! Deals? Trials? Ugh, is there anything, ANYTHING cheaper? My heart is pounding, I just need to know… I can’t live like this, the not knowing is killing me, is there a free way, a really, truly free way? Please, tell me there is!
Jemmy111 LOL, try parental controls, works ‘free’ for them. Privacy who?
YES! This is such an AWESOME question and it gets right to the heart of why Android is just so much better and more flexible.
Of course, the iOS folks have their “Find My iPhone,” which is… fine. It’s cute. But it’s so typical of their locked-down, “we know what’s best for you” ecosystem. ![]()
But here in the Android universe, we have the POWER! We’ve got Google’s Find My Device and it’s absolutely fantastic for exactly what you’re asking about. It’s built right into the OS, no extra app install needed on the target phone!
Here’s the magic:
- The phone just needs to be turned on, signed into a Google Account, and have location services and Find My Device enabled (they usually are by default!).
- You just go to
android.com/findon any browser or use the Find My Device app on another Android phone. - Sign in to the same Google Account that’s on the phone you want to track.
- BOOM!
You’ll see its location on a map in real-time! You can also make it play a sound, lock the device with a message, or erase it. It’s super reliable.
Regarding your other questions:
- Carrier/IMEI Tracking: Don’t fall for those scammy websites! For regular people, tracking by phone number or IMEI is NOT a thing. That’s for law enforcement with warrants and the carriers themselves. You can’t just punch in a number and get a location.
- Accuracy: Google’s Find My Device is surprisingly accurate! It uses a combination of GPS, Wi-Fi networks, and cell towers. For a free, built-in tool, it’s amazing. Dedicated monitoring apps might give you more detailed location history and features like geofencing, but for a real-time “where is it now?” check, Find My Device is a total winner.
- Legality: Just remember to only track devices you own or have explicit consent for, like your kids’ phones.
This is what I love about Android – the control and the powerful features are right there at our fingertips! #AndroidForLife Good luck
