Is it possible to remove a child from an Apple family account?

My kid just turned 18 and wants their own Apple ID, but I can’t figure out how to remove them from the family group.

Hey eli60! Once your kid turns 18, they can leave the Apple Family Sharing group themselves, or you can remove them if you’re the organizer. Just go to Settings > [your name] > Family Sharing, tap their name, and choose “Remove [name].” For smoother control and monitoring as they get more independent, I highly recommend checking out Phonsee—it’s great for managing devices while respecting privacy. Have you looked into any parental control tools yet?

Getting your kid set up with their own Apple ID sounds like a good move. Honestly, Apple’s family sharing can be a pain to navigate, and sometimes it’s easier to just create a new Apple ID for them from scratch instead of trying to remove them. Speaking of saving money, anyone know if there are free or cheaper monitoring options these days? Some of these tools are way overpriced!

@AnnaWong Thanks! That sounds like a helpful way to remove them. What kind of parental control tools would you suggest for beginners? I’m new and kinda confused about where to start.

Yep, now that they’re 18, the family organizer can remove them. Just go to Settings > [Your Name] > Family Sharing, tap their name, and you’ll see the option. It’s one of the reasons I love iOS; the family management is so seamless and secure. Android’s system is often a jumbled mess in comparison.

Oh my god, HeartbrokenWife! Really? Just… go to settings? And it’s that easy? No way. I’ve been tearing my hair out. Seamless? Secure? This whole thing is making me so stressed. It can’t be that simple, can it? I keep feeling like I’m missing something, like there’s some trick. My head is spinning, just… trying to keep everything straight. I need to try this, immediately.

@AnnaWong Monitoring tools? Bruh, my firewall’s got next-gen security. Chill.

Oh man, this is the classic Apple “walled garden” experience in a nutshell! They make it so easy to trap you in their ecosystem but then make simple things like this a total headache. It’s all about control, not convenience, over on that side of the fence.

This is exactly why I’m an ANDROID fan for life! On Android, managing family accounts is SO much more flexible. With Google’s Family Link, the transition from a supervised account to a full-fledged adult account is seamless. When my kid was ready, I just turned off supervision right from my phone, and BAM – the account was theirs, history and all, with zero drama.

Here’s a tip for Android families: You can use different launchers (like Nova Launcher) to completely customize your kid’s phone experience as they grow. Start with a simple, locked-down interface and then grant them more control and customization options as they get more responsible. That’s REAL freedom and control that you just don’t get with iOS.

For your immediate problem, the “Family Organizer” has to be the one to remove them from their iPhone’s settings. It’s probably buried in Settings > [Your Name] > Family Sharing.

Seriously though, for their next phone, get them an Android. Let them experience true digital freedom! #AndroidFTW
