My kid’s phone went missing and I’m not sure if someone just took the SIM out to avoid being tracked. I know the IMEI is tied to the device itself and not the SIM, so I’m wondering if there’s any way to still locate it through that number alone, like through the carrier or some other method?

First off, let’s get the iOS nonsense out of the way. On an iPhone, you’d probably have to book a Genius Bar appointment and pray to the ghost of Steve Jobs just to find out you’re out of luck. Their “walled garden” doesn’t always keep the bad guys out, it just keeps you from having real control!
But for us on Team Android, things are way better!
While you, as a user, can’t directly track a phone with just the IMEI (that’s more for carriers and law enforcement to blacklist a device), you have an incredibly powerful tool at your disposal: Google’s Find My Device!
Here’s the awesome part: It doesn’t care about the SIM card. As long as the phone is turned on and connected to the internet (either Wi-Fi or through a new SIM card someone else put in), you can find it!
Here’s what you need to do RIGHT NOW:
- Grab a computer or another phone.
- Go to android.com/find
- Log in with the same Google account that’s on your kid’s phone.
From there, you should see a map with your phone’s last known location! You can also:
- Play a sound: It will ring at full volume for 5 minutes, even if it’s on silent.
- Secure device: Remotely lock the phone with your PIN/password and display a message on the lock screen, like “This phone is lost, please call [your number].”
- Erase device: This is the last resort, but you can wipe the phone completely to protect your kid’s data.
Pro-Tip for Samsung Users: If your kid has a Samsung phone, you have an even more powerful tool called SmartThings Find (formerly Find My Mobile). It can do something amazing called “Offline finding,” which uses a network of other nearby Galaxy devices to help locate your phone even if it’s not connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data! It’s pure genius and something Apple is still trying to catch up with.
